Entertaiment
Entertaiment is the activity of providing pleasure or amusement. It can involve activities such as listening to music, watching dance or theater performances, reading books and magazines for information, pleasure and enrichment, playing sports and games, visiting museums and art galleries, and creating or appreciating visual art.
The word entertainment comes from Middle English entretenement (“support, maintenance”), derived from Old French entretenir “to hold together, stick together,” from the Latin inter- (“inside”) + tenir (“to hold”); the suffix -mentum was added to verb stems to form nouns expressing the result or effect of the action (as in amazement, betterment, merriment). It entered French in late 15c, and came into English from 16c. The related word amusement also dates from about the same time. Related words include entertainer, emulation, amusement park.
