Entertaiment

Something that gives pleasure, diversion, or amusement: solving a crossword puzzle is an entertainment for many people.

Children’s play, for example, provides an important form of entertainment for them and helps prepare them for adult responsibilities (through a simulation of parenting through dolls, pets or group games); teaches motor skills, needed for sports and music; develops social skills by teaching them how to interact with others; and provides a distraction from work by engaging them in creative activities like story writing and re-telling. The power of an entertaining story such as Scheherazade, from the Persian professional storytelling tradition, is demonstrated by its ability to inspire re-tellings in different media – Rimsky-Korsakov and Ravel wrote orchestral works; Pasolini made a film adaptation and there are now innovative video games.
