What Is Entertaiment?
Articles
Entertaiment is the broadest of all categories and encompasses all activities that give pleasure, diversion or amusement, whether a meal adapted for two or a performance staged for thousands. Entertainment can be fun, but it may also be serious, such as a religious festival or political satire. Entertainment can also be a way to develop skills, such as in the case of children’s play, which prepares them for adult responsibilities (through the mimicking of adults); or learning a musical instrument or a sport. One of the most famous examples of this is Scheherazade, a story from Persian professional storytelling tradition that has inspired composers such as Rimsky-Korsakov and Ravel; a film by Pasolini; and an innovative video game.
The word entertainment derives from the Middle French entretenement, from the Latin inter tenere and the Indo-European root ten. See the Related Words below for more information.
